Thumb of Michigan

Visit the Thumb of Michigan. The Thumb is a peninsula, which thrusts itself into Lake Huron and is bounded by Bay City on the West, Port Austin on the North, and Port Huron on the Southeast. Travel past Victorian mansions on Center Street in Bay City. Motor down M25, which is the primary route, through Unionville, which has a large Moravian population. The Moravians brought to the US an interesting musical tradition based on their Religious beliefs. Neither has changed much in the last three hundred years.

Stop in Sebewaing, which has a Maritime Museum only open Thursday through Sunday. Don’t trust the sign about it being open.

On the road again pass by the Pioneer Sugar plant. Did you know that Michigan’s Thumb is noted for sugar beet production? There are four plants in the area looking for 1000 seasonal workers to help refine the beets into sweetness itself.

Bay Port is a town noted for its humunguous fish sandwiches. Try one. They are amazingly delicious.

Visit the Sanilac petroglyphs near Ubly. The signage directing to the petroglyphs is very limited. The entrance is a small parking lot which holds ten cars at the most. It is very easy to miss. The petroglyphs were discovered after a major fire in 1881 destroyed most of the forests in The Thumb. No one knows their origins. They are guessed to be at least 1800 years old. What the petroglyphs depict are pictures of animals, symbols, and signs carved into the rock by humans. The rock is thirty feet in diameter. Even though the AAA guidebook gives directions to the place, it is very easy to miss. Nevertheless, it is a small glimpse into Native American culture thousands of years ago.
