New Hampshire'S Lakes Region – Planning A Visit

Nestled in the Middle of the Granite State, New Hampshire’s Lakes Region offers an oasis of rolling green mountains and pristine fresh water lakes. Defined as the immediate area surrounding Squam Lake, Lake Winnisquam and Lake Winnipesaukee, the lakes region is the perfect retreat to get away and enjoy life for a while. Under two hours from Boston, this scenic location host 4 seasons of fun. From summer boating on Lake Winnipesaukee to hitting the ski trails on Gunstock during the winter, a vacation in the lakes region is a great way to let off some steam.

Skiing with a view

Gunstock Ski Resort, the local ski mountain offers a wide variety of trails in close proximity to other local attractions and lodging. The panoramic views looking over the many islands and harbors of Lake Winnipesaukee showcase the natural beauty of this New Hampshire vacation spot. For more area skiing, just take a short ride up I-93 for access to Waterville Valley and Loon Mountain.

Water Fun

While many enjoy the winters, the summer season is not to be missed. Covering 69 square miles, Lake Winnipesaukee contains over 253 islands. This magnificent lake offers access to a number of resort lake towns like Meredith, The Weirs and Wolfeboro. Enjoy the water by renting a boat (requires certification) or take a scenic cruise on the 230 foot Mount Washington cruise line. For those of you who enjoy the shore, visit Weirs Beach and catch a tan while taking in the activities on the boardwalk.

In the Lakes Region, each village and town offers a unique motel, hotel or full-service resort to fit your needs. When most people think about New England Foliage they envision a drive through rural Vermont. Take my advice and head up to the Lakes Region during the fall season. You are guaranteed not to be disappointed. With a wide array of maple syrup farms and apple orchards, the small towns surrounding the lakes offer a touching experience unique to New Hampshire. Take a drive around Winnipesaukee and park at the viewing pull off near Mount Major. The resplendent reds and yellows of fall flow right down to the lapping shores of the lake, an image you will never forget.

Hiking

With such a scenic backdrop, grabbing some peace and quiet along with some higher elevation can rejuvenate your spirit and leave you wanting more. The area hiking is fantastic. Anybody looking for a solid yet not overwhelming climb can scale the local peaks and get a birds-eye view of nature. From the more basic climbs like Mount Major and Red Hill to the cliffside ladders scaling up the last heights of Mount Morgan, whatever you do don’t forget your camera.

With so much to offer, the Lakes Region is a wonderful oasis tucked into the middle part of the Granite State. Take a loved one and set aside some time to really experience the area. The Lakes Region is a top-notch vacation destination.
