Find Marriage Records - How to Get New York State Marriage Records
The first step in finding New York marriage records is figuring out whether the wedding took place in New York City or New York State. This article assumes you have already done this, and know that the marriage was held outside New York City and its 5 boroughs, Manhattan, Kings (also known as Brooklyn), Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island (also known as Richmond).
For a New York State wedding, you can order a certified copy of the marriage certificate using the information in the Vital Records section of the New York State Department of Health website.
You can request certified copies of marriage records by mail, or by telephone using the information at the website. You can also request records online through a third-party service, for an additional fee (currently $7.50).
The basic fee for conducting a search is $30 ($45 if you want priority handling). Depending on exactly how you order it and whether you're willing to pay for priority handling, you will receive your results in somewhere between 5 business days and 8 weeks.
But there's another catch. New York State requires that you prove to their satisfaction that you are entitled to have a copy of the marriage certificate. See the website for more on what constitutes acceptable proof.
